Long Live Rembrandt

This ceramic piece is titled: MULTICULTURAL NEST.

I was inspired by many facets of Rembrandt.
He often painted biblical representations and scenes from society, which is why my piece
symbolises religion and current society.
There are two bird entrances, one Christian and one Muslim. “As free as a bird”, for meeting
and connecting.
To express the vulnerability of this piece, I chose to use porcelain clay.

Rembrandt was born in Leiden, known as the Cloth City (Lakenstad). That is why I started by
pressing the folds of a piece of cloth into the surface of the clay. Because Rembrandt
painted realistic images of lace collars, I imprinted the design of a lace collar into the cross
and arch entrances.
By colouring the fabric folds and imprints with copper oxide, I tried to imitate light and dark
contrasts from dark green to dark copper.

I then placed two domes on the nest. The top one is glazed with gold luster, referring to
Rembrandt’s paintings made in the Golden Age.

This piece rests on four reinforcing steel bars attached to a wooden base.

Workshops

Would you like to learn more about sculpting, experimenting, and creating? I deliver workshops because I enjoy sharing creativity with others. Prior experience is not necessary.

Choose one option for your workshop, to make your own:

If you don’t want to get your fingers dirty in the clay, you can instead decorate a bowl, plate, and/or mug.

On request, I can organise tailored workshops for groups, for example if you want to have a workshop with friends and/or family.

Workshop price: €69 per person
Workshop duration: 2.5 to 3 hours.
Includes:

Work pieces can be collected after 4-6 weeks.

Number of participants: minimum 6, maximum 10.

Registration is final once payment has been made. Cancellation is not possible, but you can reschedule to another available date if needed. If I am unable to deliver a workshop, I will be sure to inform you in advance.

About me

I have been working with ceramics since 1998.
I first started using clay at the Free Academy in Delft.
I began focusing on hand shaping clay because I can express more of my ideas using this method, and I usually use stoneware clay.
I often find nature to be my source of inspiration and I create objects that can be displayed in the garden, some of which have a function in nature.
